Efforts are being made by the new management of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to ensure that Nigerian citizens get quality, constant and affordable internet services as well as due value for their money, according to its Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (EVC/CEO), Dr. Aminu Maida.
Dr. Maida stated this recently on his X social media handle while responding to a tweet by a user, “Randy Peter,” who was lamenting over the high cost of data and poor services from service providers.
“Randy Peter” also known as Peter Akah, while posting a video complaining of the high cost of data and poor quality of service on his X handle urged the new Minister of Communications and Digital Economy and the EVC/CEO to urgently come to the rescue of internet users.
Mr. Akah who is a comedian and entertainer maintained that data had become a necessity and not a luxury in the lives of the average Nigerian pointedly described data as an “essential commodity” otherwise called ‘’essenco’’ in Nigerian parlance. He called on the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led government to institute a process to robustly engage with stakeholders in the telecommunications industry to address the vexed issue of data so enable Nigerian citizens to get value for their hard-earned money.
And in an instant dramatic move that has got Nigerians interested in the rapid response mode displayed by the new NCC management, Dr. Aminu Maida thanked Mr. Peter Akah for the video, explaining that the mandate of his Commission was clear and unambiguous: provide adequate and commensurate quality of internet service and value for money paid for services by Nigerians always.
“Mr. Peter, we understand your frustrations with the issues surrounding the cost of data. Our work at the NCC is to ensure that consumers like you receive not just quality service but affordable internet service,” Dr. Maida noted.
Tweeting further, he assured Nigerians that the Commission was looking into the vexed issue to ensure that citizens not only get fair price for data purchase but also receive improved quality service.
“We are looking into this,” said Dr. Maida noting, “you can rest assured that Nigerians will pay only the fair price for data—and get improved quality internet service as well.”
